Stop The War Rally.

By Sue E, Staff Reporter

London, England - Another day, another anti-Bush protest, the first I was aware of it was at work at lunch time hearing the police helicopters overhead and the distant noise of the marchers. At 4:30pm I set off towards Trafalgar Sq, the final destination of the marchers, were the rally was being held, I didn't get very far before I came across a still mass of people marching down Kingsway, either the march started late or these people had only started walking.

After cutting through side streets I walked up the Strand were I could hear the noise before I could see the people. Getting to Trafalgar Sq the cacophony of noise was incredible almost drowning out the speakers situated on a stage in front of Nelsons column. The atmosphere as with the Burnt Earth protest was good natured and the loudest noise and cheering came with the symbolic toppling of a statue of George Bush as a reference to the toppling of Saddams statue in Baghdad earlier in the year.

The police numbers for the rally is reported to be 70,000 but the square was jammed packed full of people, again not just the usual suspects but ordinary people like me who had come from work, the organizers said the number was more like 300,000 so the exact number is probably something in between but a pretty incredible turnout for a weekday demonstration.

When I got home I heard about the terrible suicide bombings of the HBSC building and the British Consulate in Istanbul the demonstrators would say that the actions of our politicians has caused this act of terrorism against Brithish interests and the politicians have used it to justify their actions - who is right? All I know is that I have lived in London all of my adult life and the level of demonstration these last few days is unprecedented against the visit of a head of state especially one who is the President of our closest ally.
