Protest and March for Sammy Yatim!
By Sue Earps
Protesters at Yonge-Dundas Square.
A rally and march was held at Toronto's Yonge-Dundas Square on August 13, 2013 to protest the death of Sammy Yatim, during an altercation with Toronto Police in late July. Mr. Yatim was alleged to have brandished a knife at passengers of a streetcar and then at police before being shot several times and then later tasered by police. Yatim succumbed to his injuries. Protests and criticism came from the general public after cell phone videos of the event became public. This rally and march was to get publicity for the incident and demands to investigate and change the way police handle such situations.

The rally started at Yonge-Dundas Square in downtown Toronto where over 100 protesters congregated and met with the press. Then the group made their way up city streets to Toronto Police Headquarters at 40 College Street.

At Police Headquarters the Yatim family was able to meet with Police Chief Bill Blair who had previously stated there would be an official review of all police practices and specifically the use of force.
