Flora London Marathon 2004
By Sue E., Journalist
A cold grim rainy morning sees me at Greenwich SE London amongst crowds of cheering people , no not another protest but the London Marathon . A record number of 30,000 people have taken part in this 26 mile race from Greenwich through the city of London to The Mall in front of Buckingham Palace. I caught with them at the 7 mile point in Greenwhich then the halfway stage at Tower Bridge, the 24 mile stage along the Victoria Embankment and the last few miles along Birdcage Walk towards the finishing line. As well as the professional runners, a lot of people were running for charities but everyone taking part should be applauded for their tenacity as it was teeming down with rain for most of the time. Pictures should follow :
Greenwich - the front runners at the beginning of the marathon
One of the woman runners
Even Death is having a go!
Who said English men were "Fairies"?
Tower Bridge - half way - and still running!
Embankment - nearing the end!
Westminster - still going strong
People of all ages took part
And to the finishing line - The Mall!
Finally - the end of the race! |
